From Dead to Alive: How God’s Grace Changes Everything | Abundant Life Church Massachusetts

Have you ever felt like you’re trying your hardest in life—but still not getting anywhere?

Maybe you’ve been pushing forward, striving, improving, and doing everything you know to do… yet something still feels off underneath the surface.

At Abundant Life Church in Massachusetts, we believe this message speaks directly to that struggle. Because sometimes, the issue isn’t effort—it’s something deeper.

When Effort Isn’t Enough

In the message, we hear a powerful story about a family kayaking off the coast of Spain. Everything seemed fine—until it became clear the kayak was filling with water.

At first, it felt like a paddling problem.

“Maybe I just need to try harder.”

But the real issue wasn’t effort—it was a hole underneath the surface. And no matter how hard they paddled, the kayak was going to sink.

That’s a picture of how many of us live our lives.

We strive. We push. We try to improve.

But if something deeper isn’t addressed, we’ll never get where we’re trying to go.

The Bible’s Bold Truth: We Were Dead

In Ephesians 2, the Apostle Paul doesn’t sugarcoat the problem. He doesn’t say we were struggling or off-track—he says:

“You were dead in your trespasses and sins.”

That’s a hard truth to accept.

Many of us think:

  • “I’ve made mistakes, but I’m a good person.”

  • “I just need a reset.”

  • “If I try harder, I can fix this.”

But the Bible says the problem isn’t just behavior—it’s spiritual death.

And here’s the reality:

Effort can’t fix what’s dead.

Why “Resetting” Doesn’t Work

We often treat life like a glitch:

  • Take a vacation

  • Start a new job

  • Change relationships

  • Get more disciplined

But just like restarting a broken device doesn’t always fix it, external changes can’t solve an internal condition.

If the root problem is deeper, the solution must be deeper too.

The Turning Point: “But God”

Everything changes with two powerful words:

“But God.”

Paul continues:

“But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ.”

This is the heart of the gospel.

God didn’t wait for us to fix ourselves.
He didn’t demand we clean up first.

He stepped in when we were at our worst.

Grace, Not Effort

Here’s the good news:

  • You don’t earn salvation

  • You don’t achieve transformation

  • You don’t fix yourself first

You receive it.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.”

Grace means:

  • You didn’t earn it

  • You don’t deserve it

  • You can’t repay it

And yet—it’s freely given.

Jesus Doesn’t Stand at a Distance

Think about someone drowning.

You don’t stand on the shore giving instructions.

You jump in and rescue them.

That’s what Jesus did.

He stepped into our broken world, lived a perfect life, died on the cross, and rose again—so we could move from death to life.

You Are Not Your Past

One of the most powerful moments in the message is the reminder that:

  • You are not too far gone

  • You are not defined by your past

  • You are not beyond God’s grace

In fact, Scripture says:

You are God’s workmanship—His masterpiece.

That means:

  • You were created on purpose

  • You were created for a purpose

  • God is not finished with your story

Saying Goodbye to Yesterday

Following Jesus doesn’t mean pretending your past didn’t happen.

It means recognizing:

Jesus already paid for it.

You don’t carry shame anymore.
You don’t live in regret anymore.
You don’t strive for approval anymore.

You walk in new life.

A Message for New England Today

Here in Massachusetts and across New England, it’s easy to fall into a mindset of independence—figuring things out on our own.

But this message reminds us:

We were never meant to do life alone.

God offers something better than self-improvement:

Transformation through grace.

Your Next Step

You don’t need perfect words.
You don’t need a perfect life.

You just need an open heart.

Today can be the day you move:

  • From striving → to surrender

  • From brokenness → to healing

  • From death → to life

No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God’s grace is available to you right now.

You don’t have to keep paddling harder in a sinking boat.

There’s a better way.

There’s new life in Jesus.

And it starts today.
