Was It Worth It? Why Faithful Discipleship Shapes How We Finish the Race
Winter storms, nervous forecasts, and New England humor set the scene at Abundant Life Church as Pastor Luke opened this message with warmth and authenticity. But beneath the laughter was a serious question—one many believers wrestle with over time:
Was it worth it?
Was it worth the effort, the sacrifice, the sleepless nights, the hard conversations, and the emotional investment required to truly follow Jesus and make disciples?
As the final message in a series on discipleship, this sermon turned to the Apostle Paul’s final recorded words to Timothy to answer that question—not from theory, but from a life fully lived.
The Great Commission Is Clear - The Process Is Not Easy
Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18–20 give believers their mission: go and make disciples. But while the calling is unmistakable, the process is challenging. Discipleship doesn’t come with shortcuts, instant clarity, or immunity from struggle.
At Abundant Life Church, the vision to bring Christ’s hope and healing to transformed lives is rooted in this reality. Transformation doesn’t happen only inside church walls on Sunday mornings—it happens through real relationships, everyday conversations, and faithful presence in daily life across Massachusetts and beyond.
Paul and Timothy: Discipleship Over a Lifetime
The Apostle Paul understood this better than most. Once a persecutor of the Church, Paul encountered the risen Jesus and began a long journey of spiritual formation. His relationship with Timothy was not transactional or quick—it was deeply relational, patient, and intentional.
Paul taught Timothy that:
Faith is formed over time
Discipline and perseverance matter
You must first be discipled before discipling others
Faithfulness in small things leads to endurance in big ones
By the time Paul writes 2 Timothy 4:6–8, he is nearing the end of his life—and he looks back without regret.
Running the Race Means Finishing Well
Paul uses the metaphor of a race: “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.”
Running a race isn’t about a perfect start—it’s about endurance. Many runners fall behind early, stumble, or struggle along the way, yet still finish strong. Discipleship works the same way.
Faithfulness over time—not perfection or performance—is the true measure of spiritual maturity.
Paul didn’t claim victory by beating others. He claimed fulfillment by finishing the race God set before him.
A Poured-Out Life Is Never Wasted
Paul describes his life as a drink offering—poured out completely. That image challenges a culture that values comfort, efficiency, and visible success.
In youth ministry, small groups, mentorship, and volunteer service, much of discipleship work goes unseen. At times, it feels exhausting and thankless. Yet moments of genuine transformation—a prayer whispered, a burden shared, a heart softened—reveal the eternal impact of faithful investment.
A life poured out in discipleship is not wasted.
It is fulfilled.
The Harvest Is Here in New England
Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” That reality is visible right here in New England.
Abundant Life Church has seen incredible growth, with new faces walking through the doors each week—people searching for hope, truth, and belonging. Discipleship is how that growth becomes transformation.
Not everyone is called to the same role, but every follower of Jesus is called to make disciples—to walk with others, share faith honestly, and remain faithful through the long journey.
So—was it worth it?
Paul’s answer is a confident yes. Not because the journey was easy, but because it was faithful. The reward was never about winning the race, but about finishing it with faith intact.
Jesus stands at the finish line—not comparing times or rankings—but welcoming those who kept running.
For believers in Massachusetts and beyond, the invitation remains the same: run the race, pour out your life, and trust that faithfulness will always be worth it.
