What Is Your Alabaster Jar? A Powerful Message on Devotion, Surrender, and Faith
Some of the most meaningful acts of love are the ones that happen quietly.
They happen in early mornings, unseen sacrifices, faithful prayers, and moments where someone gives more than anyone realizes. Often, we don’t fully understand the depth of that love until years later.
In a recent message at Abundant Life Church in Massachusetts, we explored one of the most powerful acts of devotion recorded in Scripture: the story of Mary pouring expensive perfume over Jesus in Matthew 26. While the people around her called it wasteful, Jesus called it beautiful.
And that same invitation toward wholehearted devotion still speaks to us today.
Whether you’re walking through a season of surrender, struggling to trust God, or learning what it means to faithfully follow Jesus in everyday life, this message reminds us that nothing given to Jesus is ever wasted.
Love That Gives Without Holding Back
In Matthew 26:6–13, Jesus is reclining at the table in Bethany when a woman approaches Him carrying an alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. Without hesitation, she pours it out over Him.
To the disciples, it looked reckless.
The perfume was worth nearly a year’s wages. It could have been sold. It could have been saved. It could have been used “more responsibly.”
But Jesus saw something deeper.
“She has done a beautiful thing to me.” — Matthew 26:10
Mary’s offering wasn’t casual. It was costly. The alabaster jar represented something precious — possibly her savings, inheritance, or greatest possession. Once broken open, it could never be resealed.
That’s what true devotion often looks like.
It doesn’t always make sense on paper. It doesn’t always appear practical. But love for Jesus has always required surrender.
In a culture that teaches us to hold tightly to comfort, security, and control, Jesus invites us into a different kind of life — one marked by trust.
Mary’s Alabaster Jar: A Picture of True Devotion
One of the most powerful truths from this message is this:
Faith that costs nothing rarely changes anything.
Mary didn’t give Jesus leftovers. She gave Him her best.
And all of us have an “alabaster jar” in our lives — something valuable we struggle to place in God’s hands.
For some people, it’s control.
For others, it’s fear.
Sometimes it’s time, relationships, dreams, comfort, or past wounds.
The question becomes:
What are we still gripping tightly that Jesus is asking us to trust Him with?
At Abundant Life Church, we believe God doesn’t ask us to surrender things to punish us or take joy away from us. He asks because He knows what He can do with surrendered hearts.
In our hands, what we carry may feel limited.
In His hands, it becomes holy.
When Obedience Is Misunderstood
One of the hardest parts of following Jesus is that obedience will not always be understood by other people.
Mary experienced this firsthand.
The disciples criticized her act of worship. Judas especially called it wasteful. But Jesus defended her publicly.
That tension still exists today.
When you choose purity over compromise, generosity over comfort, obedience over popularity, or faith over fear, not everyone will understand your decisions.
Sometimes people misunderstand devotion because they cannot yet see what God is doing beneath the surface.
The message also shared a deeply personal testimony about trusting God despite criticism and uncertainty. Choosing obedience often feels risky to the outside world, but God sees the heart behind every act of surrender.
As Scripture reminds us:
“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7
That truth matters for believers throughout Massachusetts and New England today, where faith can sometimes feel countercultural. Following Jesus faithfully in our workplaces, schools, communities, and homes may not always earn applause — but it never goes unseen by God.
The Legacy of Quiet Faithfulness
Perhaps the most moving part of this passage is Jesus’ final statement:
“Wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” — Matthew 26:13
Mary wasn’t trying to build a platform. She wasn’t trying to become famous. She simply loved Jesus deeply.
And yet, 2,000 years later, her story is still being told.
That’s the power of quiet faithfulness.
The world measures value by visibility, but God measures value by faithfulness.
The prayers nobody hears.
The sacrifices nobody notices.
The worship offered in private.
The moments of obedience when nobody is clapping.
Those things matter deeply to God.
This message also highlighted the story of Susanna Wesley, whose faithful devotion shaped generations through her children, John and Charles Wesley. History often remembers the visible leaders, but heaven remembers the faithful people behind them.
And maybe that’s encouraging for someone today.
Your faithfulness matters.
Your prayers matter.
Your obedience matters.
Even when nobody else sees it.
What Is Your Alabaster Jar?
As the message concluded, the invitation became personal.
What is God asking you to surrender?
Maybe it’s fear born from past pain.
Maybe it’s grief, anxiety, shame, or control.
Maybe it’s a dream you’ve held too tightly.
Jesus is not asking you to have everything figured out. He’s simply inviting you to trust Him.
The beautiful truth of the gospel is that God specializes in transforming surrendered things.
He took:
A shepherd’s staff and parted seas.
A little boy’s lunch and fed thousands.
Fishermen and built the early church.
A cross and brought salvation to the world.
So what could He do with your alabaster jar?
Mary’s story reminds us that true devotion is rarely flashy. More often, it’s found in ordinary moments of surrender and trust.
The disciples saw waste.
Jesus saw worship.
And today, He still sees every act of faithfulness offered in love.
At Abundant Life Church, we believe that God honors surrendered hearts. Whether you’re taking your first step toward Jesus or learning to trust Him more deeply, know this:
Nothing given to Jesus is ever wasted.
If you’re looking for a church home in Massachusetts where you can grow in faith, encounter God’s presence, and walk in authentic community, we’d love to welcome you.
