Elementary Teacher Aide

As an Elementary Teaching Aide, you have the opportunity to set the tone for learning for the rest of a student’s life. When students have a positive, Christ-centered educational experience during elementary school, they are more prepared to take on the challenges of middle school, high school, and college. You are able to teach students to love learning, to love Jesus, and also how to overcome the challenges and obstacles they face that keep them from reaching their goals. While adhering to the core curriculum outlined by the school using Massachusetts’ Frameworks as the standard, you are able to find creative, engaging ways to teach students real-life application of difficult concepts like literature, math, and science.

Responsibilities

  • Support the classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned.
  • Participate in developing a daily curriculum plan.
  • Model and promote Christian practices and the love of our Lord, - Jesus.
  • Assist in providing individual and small-group instruction, including running a center time activity.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining student behavior, including student participation and acceptance of classroom routines and expectations.
  • Prepare instructional materials, including curriculum games and activities as directed.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in creating and maintaining the classroom environment, including shared housekeeping tasks to keep the room sanitized and safe, and replacing materials and supplies.
  • Assist in both setup and clean up of the classroom throughout the daily schedule.
  • Help plan daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities initiated by the classroom teacher. Provide play props and visual aids when possible.
  • Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Inform the classroom teacher of any issues or special needs of individual students.
  • Check/correct work for compliance with the teacher's instructions.
  • Help maintain individual records for each student, including photo taking and documentation.
  • Collect and display suitable material for educational displays, including developing learning centers.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Follow the evacuation and stay-in-place protocol.
  • Perform a variety of office assistant tasks such as photocopying, filing, etc. as needed.
  • Demonstrate willingness to work as a team with the classroom teacher through open communication, honest and kind exchanges. Support the classroom culture.
  • Assume the teacher role in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Act as substitute teacher for various grade levels.
  • Maintain full confidentiality, support teacher-parent interactions. The classroom teacher will provide updates and information as needed to parents.
  • Perform other duties as needed and identified by the classroom teacher or the school Principal.
  • Monitor afternoon recess each day.

Operating Model

  • Reporting Lines: Reports to the classroom teachers as immediate supervisor. The principal is the administrator with overarching supervisory responsibilities.
  • Co-operative Relationships: Elementary Teachers, Principal, Learning Specialist, and Special Subject Teachers
  • Participate in regular Meetings with classroom teachers to review priorities, opportunities, and issues.

Position Requirements & Limitations

  • The position works on-site for the weekly hour requirement.
  • The position is focused on helping the education department deliver a high-quality, faith-based curriculum.
  • To allow for clarity of work schedule and focus on the main priorities of the role, the position will limit work to 40 hours per week and ensure any volunteer time is clearly delineated from the work schedule.

Experience

The Elementary Teaching Aide will have the following qualifications:

  • Associate degree in education, child development, or a health-related field.
  • Two years of experience working with school-age children.
