What Does It Mean to Be Saved? A Biblical Guide to Salvation and Following Jesus

Many people have questions about faith but are not always sure where to begin. Questions like “How do I become a Christian?” or “What does it mean to be saved?” are more common than people realize.

At Abundant Life Church in Wilmington, Massachusetts, we often talk with people who are exploring faith for the first time or rediscovering it after many years away. Some grew up around church but never understood the message of the gospel. Others are simply searching for hope, purpose, or healing in their lives.

New England has a rich spiritual history, yet it is also one of the regions of the United States where many people have never personally experienced a relationship with Jesus Christ. Our heart, as a church, is to help people discover the hope and healing that Jesus offers, so that their lives can be transformed.

To understand what it means to become a Christian, it helps to start with what the Bible calls the Gospel, which simply means “Good News.”

What Is Salvation?

The Bible teaches that every person was created by God and designed to live in relationship with Him. Yet the reality of sin has broken that relationship.

Romans 3:23 explains it this way: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Sin is more than just making mistakes. It is the condition of our hearts that causes us to live independently from God and outside of His design.

Because of sin, humanity stands separated from God and unable to repair that relationship on our own.

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Salvation is God’s rescue plan. It is the way He restores us to a right relationship with Him.

God’s Solution: Jesus

The message of Christianity is not about people trying harder to be good. It is about what God has done for us through Jesus.

John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Jesus came to earth, lived a perfect life, and willingly gave His life on the cross for our sins. Three days later, He rose from the dead, defeating sin and death.

Because of Jesus, forgiveness and new life are available to anyone who believes in Him.

Salvation Is a Gift of Grace

One of the most important truths in the Bible is that salvation cannot be earned.

Ephesians 2:8–9 explains, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

This means salvation is not about trying to be good enough. It is about receiving the gift of grace that God offers through Jesus.

The Bible teaches that faith in Jesus is not simply agreeing with certain ideas about God. It involves turning toward Jesus in faith and surrendering our lives to Him.

Throughout the New Testament, this response is often described as repentance. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. It is a change of heart and direction.

In Acts 3:19 the Bible says, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”

Repentance is not about achieving perfection. It is about recognizing that we need God’s forgiveness and choosing to turn away from the life we were living apart from Him.

At the same time, the Bible also describes salvation as trusting Jesus not only as Savior but as Lord.

To call Jesus Lord means recognizing that He is the rightful leader of our lives. Instead of living for ourselves, we begin learning to follow Him.

Beginning a relationship with Jesus is not the end of a journey. It is the beginning of a new life of following Him. The question many people naturally ask is simple: how does someone actually begin that relationship?

How Someone Begins a Relationship with Jesus

The Bible describes a simple response to the gospel.

Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Becoming a Christian involves:

  • Believing that Jesus is the Son of God and trusting Him as Savior

  • Turning away from sin and turning toward God

  • Beginning a new life of following Jesus

It is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a new life with God.

A Transformed Life

When someone places their faith in Jesus, something deeper than a change in beliefs takes place. The Bible speaks of it as a new beginning.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

This does not mean life suddenly becomes perfect. But it does mean something real begins to change on the inside. Forgiveness replaces guilt. Hope begins to push back against despair. And over time, God begins reshaping our hearts, our priorities, and the direction of our lives.

Following Jesus is not just about escaping judgment or checking a religious box. It is about being restored to the life God originally designed for us.

One of the first steps many new believers take after placing their faith in Christ is water baptism. Baptism does not save us, but it is a public declaration of the new life Jesus has begun in us. You can learn more about what the Bible teaches about water baptism.

That is why the message of salvation has always been a message of hope and healing. Jesus meets people in broken places and begins transforming their lives from the inside out.

A Heart for New England

At Abundant Life Church, this is why we care so deeply about sharing the message of Jesus.

New England has a rich spiritual history, but it is also widely known as one of the least reached regions of the country when it comes to personal faith. Many people have heard about religion but have never personally encountered the hope found in Jesus Christ.

Our vision as a church is simple: bringing Christ’s hope and healing to transform generations.

We believe every person deserves the opportunity to hear the gospel clearly and to experience the life-changing grace of Jesus. For families who are raising children in faith, many churches also celebrate moments like child dedication, where parents commit to raising their children to know and follow Jesus. Our desire is to be a place where people throughout the Wilmington area and surrounding communities can find community, discover God’s purpose, ask honest questions, and begin a relationship with Christ.

Taking the Next Step

If you are exploring faith and would like to talk with someone or learn more about following Jesus, we would love to walk that journey with you.

At Abundant Life Church in Wilmington, Massachusetts, our desire is to help people experience the life-changing hope found in Christ.
