What Is Child Dedication? A Biblical Commitment for Parents and the Church

For many families, the birth of a child brings deep joy along with an important question: how do we raise our children to know and follow God? The Bible reminds us that children themselves are a gift from God. Psalm 127:3 says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

At Abundant Life Church in Wilmington, Massachusetts, we often talk with families about child dedication and what it means. Many parents wonder what dedication looks like, why churches practice it, and what role it plays in raising children in faith.

Child dedication is a special moment where parents publicly commit to raising their children in a way that points them toward Jesus. It is not about the child making a decision yet. Instead, it is about parents acknowledging their responsibility to guide their child spiritually while inviting the church community to support them along the way.

Child dedication can happen when a child is a baby, but it can also take place when children are a little older. Some families dedicate their children shortly after birth, while others choose to do so when their child is a toddler or young child. What matters most is the commitment parents are making to raise their child to know and follow the Lord.

Throughout Scripture, parents are encouraged to intentionally teach their children about God. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

What Is Child Dedication?

Child dedication is a public commitment made by parents before God and the church.

During a dedication, parents express their desire to raise their child in a home where faith in Jesus is modeled, taught, and encouraged. The church also prays for the child and the family, asking God to guide and bless their journey.

Child dedication is not about salvation, and it is not a replacement for baptism. If you want to learn more, you can read our article on what it means to be saved and begin a relationship with Jesus.

In the Bible, baptism follows a personal decision to trust in Jesus Christ. Dedication focuses on the role of parents, recognizing that they have a God-given responsibility to raise their children in the knowledge and instruction of the Lord.

In other words, child dedication is a commitment made by parents, while baptism is a step of faith taken by a believer when they personally choose to follow Jesus.

A Biblical Pattern of Dedication

While the Bible does not command child dedication in the same way it commands baptism, we do see examples of parents presenting their children to God and committing them to His purposes.

In 1 Samuel 1:27–28, Hannah brings her son Samuel before the Lord after praying for him for many years. She says, “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord.”

Another example appears in Luke 2:22, when Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the temple to present Him to the Lord according to the Law of Moses.

These moments remind us that children are ultimately a gift from God and that parents are called to steward that gift faithfully.

The Responsibility of Parents

At the heart of child dedication is the responsibility parents carry in shaping the spiritual environment of their home. Ephesians 6:4 encourages parents with these words: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Proverbs 22:6 gives a similar encouragement: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

These verses remind us that faith is not formed by accident. It is cultivated over time through conversations, example, prayer, and a home where God’s presence is welcomed. Child dedication is a moment where parents say, “With God’s help, we want to lead our child toward a life that follows Jesus.”

The Role of the Church Community

Child dedication is not only about the parents. It is also about the church family.

When families dedicate their children, the church commits to walking alongside them. We pray for the next generation. We encourage parents. And we create environments where children can discover who God is and what it means to follow Him.

At Abundant Life Church, we take that responsibility seriously.

We believe church should be a place where children are welcomed, valued, and encouraged to grow in their faith. That includes giving them space to learn, laugh, and experience the joy of being part of God’s family.

Kids are going to be kids. They will have energy, curiosity, and excitement, and we celebrate that. Rather than expecting children to be silent observers, we want them to experience church as a place where they belong and where faith becomes real for them.

Helping Children Grow in Faith

One way we support families is through our ALC Kids ministry. Each week, we provide environments where children can learn about God in engaging, age-appropriate, and relevant ways.

Through worship, Bible teaching, and relationships with trusted leaders, children begin to build a foundation of faith that can guide them for the rest of their lives.

Our heart is not simply to fill a classroom. Our heart is to help children encounter Jesus and grow into the people God created them to be.

A Special Moment for Families

Child dedication often becomes a memorable milestone for families. It is a moment when parents pause to acknowledge the gift of their child and the calling to lead them spiritually.

Because it is such a imporant moment, we encourage families to invite their friends and extended family to be part of the day. Grandparents, relatives, and close friends often come together to celebrate and witness the commitment parents make to raise their child to know and follow Jesus.

For many families, it becomes a moment they remember for years to come.
